Who we are
The Advanced Ophthalmoscopy at Waterloo Labs (AOWL) are dedicated to developing and applying novel tools for retinal imaging that provide new information on cellular structure and function. According to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, an estimated 14% of Canadians are at risk of vision loss from existing eye disease, including disorders of the retina, which includes the light detecting and visual processing neurons at the back of the eye. Our goal is to provide new tools to enable clinicians’ ability for early detection of blinding retinal diseases, and for the assessment of treatment outcomes in addition to understanding the implications of aging. Founded in 2023, the multidisciplinary AOWL group includes vision scientists, physicists, optical engineers, optometrists, biologists, and software engineers all working together towards these goals.
We believe in research with integrity
