What you will learn

Learn how mathematicians think

Most mathematics programs focus on teaching students how to solve problems.

AeXIOM focuses on something deeper: helping you understand how mathematical ideas are discovered, developed, tested, and communicated. Throughout the program, you’ll learn how to:

  • Ask meaningful mathematical questions
  • Recognize patterns, structures, and connections
  • Build logical arguments and rigorous proofs
  • Develop mathematical intuition
  • Formulate and test conjectures
  • Communicate complex ideas with clarity and precision
  • Approach unfamiliar challenges with confidence
  • Think like a mathematician

By the end of the program, you will have developed the habits of mind that underpin mathematical discovery, innovation, and lifelong learning.

AeXIOM is designed to immerse students in mathematics for four
intensive and rewarding weeks. We structure every aspect of the
program to encourage exploration, collaboration, and intellectual growth.

An immersive Mathematics experience

Daily Mathematics lectures

Interactive lectures introduce you to fundamental ideas in number theory while encouraging curiosity, discussion, and mathematical discovery. Rather than simply presenting solutions, instructors guide you
through the process of developing mathematical understanding.

Challenging problem sets

Daily problem sets form the heart of the AeXIOM
experience. Through independent work, peer collaboration, and mentor support, you’ll learn to persevere through challenging questions and develop confidence in your mathematical reasoning.

Exploration labs

You’ll participate in small-group exploration labs where you investigate mathematical topics in greater depth. These sessions encourage creativity, research, collaboration, and the communication of mathematical ideas.

Faculty and mentor guidance

You have the opportunity to learn from University of Waterloo mathematics faculty and experienced mentors who provide personalized support, feedback, and encouragement throughout the program.

Residential learning community

Living on campus creates opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Become part of a community of peers who share a passion for mathematics, intellectual curiosity, and discovery.

Social activities and excursions

The program balances academic intensity with opportunities for recreation, community building, and exploration. Organized activities and excursions help you develop friendships and create lasting memories.
