Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics researchers Will Percival and Brian McNamara have received funding from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to support their work studying cosmology, galaxy clusters and supermassive black holes. The CSA announced close to $2.8 million in research grants to 14 Canadian post-secondary institutions. Through grants like this, the CSA continues to advance scientific excellence and help build a stronger, more innovative Canada.
Projects involving researchers Will Percival and Brian McNamara will benefit from this funding, which will help further cosmological research for years to come. Will Percival was awarded $150,000 in a Research Opportunities in Space Science (ROSS) CSA grant to take Cosmological measurements from the Euclid and Roman Space telescopes. The grant will support the senior management positions held by Will within the teams analyzing data from these experiments and provide key opportunities for the training of junior scientists.
Brian McNamara was jointly awarded $100,000) with Dr Luigi Gallo (St Mary’s University). Brian will analyze atmospheric gas motions in the X-ray cavities carved by jets in the Hydra A galaxy cluster to address the fundamental problem of how jet energy heats cluster atmospheres and prevents catastrophic cooling.
