Researchers at Waterloo Engineering have developed powerful new technology to quickly and accurately diagnose all kinds of cancer.
The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to tap collected human wisdom by searching a database of confirmed cases of cancer for similar digital images of tissue samples in suspected cases.
“We showed it is possible using this approach to get incredibly encouraging results if you have access to a large archive,” said Hamid Tizhoosh, a systems design engineering professor and director of the Laboratory for Knowledge Inference in Medical Image Analysis (KIMIA Lab). “It is like putting many, many pathologists in a virtual room together and having them reach consensus.”
