Chair’s Remarks

  • Waterloo Photos goes into production on Thursday August 18th. Lots of communication coming, along with some training. Natasha Jennings/Barb Yantha are the service owners, and Barb will attend the next CTSC meeting to give a demo. Lots of interest already.
  • Open Scholar now being piloted by Environment and Math. Plan to do a show and tell once there are 2-3 sites completed.
  • Computing at UW for New Employees has been scheduled for October 13th as part of SEW program. Thanks for all the input. No doubt the course will continue to be updated each time it is offered.

Approval of the minutes of the previous meeting

Robyn Landers suggested a change to the minutes (Online Academic Tools from Online Advising Tools). The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as distributed.

InterScan email protection service demonstration (Mike Patterson)

Some issues with the pilot group receiving multiple emails (up to 3) from trend_interscan. Based on feedback, IST will delay the launch until Friday September 23rd. This will provide time to figure out the solution with the vendor. As well, it will provide more time for the pilot groups to become familiar with the product and provide feedback. There was a discussion about the ** SPAM? ** header, and filtering options (a training opportunity). Mike asked CTSC members to suggest faculty members to add to the testing group.

NNTP Server (Steve Bourque)

The news server will be gone by the end of August 2016. Steve asked CTSC members to let him know as soon as possible if there are any complaints after the plug is pulled. The end of an era!

Other Business

Bob: IST Service Desk is sometimes asked by faculty members if there is a computer lab on campus they can use to do some in-class training. It’s very time consuming to phone around to inquire, and most times it’s not known who to ask. Bob asked CTSC members to provide him with information on who to contact about training labs in their faculties which may be available for booking by faculty members from another faculty. The information could be in the form of a name and contact information or a link to a webpage. Bob will collect this information and have a web page that faculty members can reference if needed.

Marko asked if the new identity management system would have the ability to provide faculty and staff lists for a faculty (for Environment for his need).  Trevor said he was able to make some lists by querying Active Directory. Colin Bell will investigate options and get back to the group.

Steve: IST-NS has removed 129.97.129.10 from the list of DNS servers handed out by the campus DHCP servers.  The existing DNS/DHCP hardware is becoming end of life and NS is planning on a hardware refresh. During that process, they would like to deprecate 129.97.129.10 and 129.97.128.10 from being DNS resolvers. These addresses exist for historical purposes and are logically configured on the same devices providing the anycast service. NS will notify CNSC and also attempt to analyze flows to these addresses in an effort to assist and inform areas where potential clients may still be using these antiquated addresses.

Roundtable Reporting

Applied Health Sciences (Trevor Bain)

New building in AHS will be in operation in September. AHS running Windows 10 in labs (Office 2016 already installed). Some water issues in TechTown, causing electrical outages (switches, computers, etc affected). Issue has been resolved.

Environment (Marko Dumancic)

Heads up regarding open web forms when web pages are migrated to responsive design (see comments from Dawn below). Getting student labs ready for the Fall term (using Windows 10).

Computer Science (Dave Gawley, Lawrence Folland)

Dave is passing the CTSC baton to Lawrence – Lawrence will be replacing Dave on CTSC starting in the Fall term. Thank-you Dave for your CTSC contributions, and welcome Lawrence. CSCF is building new distributed file system and will be offering OwnCloud (end of December).

Client Services, IST (Bob Hicks)

Darren Bondy will be the IST Communications Officer starting in September, while Natasha is on maternity leave.

Arts (Dawn Keenan)

Moving Arts faculty and ACO to responsive design. Dawn also reported web form preservation of data issue, specifically loss of a downloaded file. . Used Engineering LearnLock system which worked well but had some timeouts which will need to be addressed.

.

Math (Robyn Landers)

Active Directory switchover to Nexus next week. Hoping to take advantage of Grouper, but will skip for now, and investigate later.

Next meeting

The next meeting will be held on Thursday September 1, 2016 at 1:30pm, in EC2 111.
