Chair’s Remarks (Steven Bourque)

  • Members are asked to brainstorm agenda topics for future meetings.

Approval of the minutes of the previous meetings

The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as distributed.

Other Business

Contacting students via SMS for locked accounts

A discussion occurred on the mailing list regarding contacting students by cell phone (with numbers they provided when they registered) to inform them that their accounts have been locked.

  • The Chair suggested this topic goes to UCIST for further discussion regarding the governance and privacy of contacting students for this purpose.
  • Erick Engelke to lead a small subgroup to create a brief explainer for UCIST about use-cases of student cell phone numbers.
    • Will report back to group at a future meeting.
  • There have been some issues with re-enabling student accounts; Steven Bourque will look into this issue and report back.

Outdoor Wi-Fi on campus

The Arts quad has installed some new picnic tables as well as a new project to develop more of that outdoor space. The assumption was that there would be access points installed outdoors to allow users to access Wi-Fi while using this space.

  • No one requested this type of service from IST. Logistically and technically, installing outdoor access points is not an issue, but someone on the project needs to make the request to IST.

Roundtable Reporting

Library (Adam Savage)

  • We will be starting a knowledge management project soon, curious to know what others are using.
    • Members advocate the use of SharePoint, Confluence or a combination of both.
    • Confluence is good for operational knowledge management and also ties into Jira.
    • SharePoint is good for document storing whereas Confluence is not as good for that.

Applied Health Sciences (Trevor Bain)

  • Looking into an absence tracker for undergraduate students.
    • Science has a student accountability system that tracks student absence.

Information and Integration Management, IST (Colin Bell)

  • At a future meeting, will be bringing the topic of collaboration tools for information management.

Technology Integrated Services, IST (Steven Bourque)

  • Alert went out two days ago regarding the SSL certificates on Nexus DCs being replace with IntranetSSL type. Read the full alert on the Nexus LDAP maintenance.

Engineering (Erick Engelke)

  • Introduced Mattermost to Engineering Computing but it did not gain much traction in our group.
  • Will talk to Andrew McAlorum offline regarding Drupal 8 and browser compatibility/support.
  • Working on a major project to collect data/information for engineering accreditation. I had promoted the use of SharePoint as a place to store these documents but now some in engineering are requesting a WCMS site for this purpose.

Science (Paul Miskovsky)

  • We will be migrating eValuate to IST soon.

Arts (Bill Baer)

  • Now officially the President of the Staff Association; Keith McGowan will be representing Arts at CTSC for the next year.

Next meeting

The next meeting will be held on November 9, 2017 at 1:30pm, in EC2 1021.
