Comments and discussion

  • Contact Alison, Kathy, and Sandra if your faculty would like a presentation about research data management
  • An update can be provided at a future CTSC meeting next March or April

Chair's remarks

  • No remarks.

Approval of the minutes of the previous meeting

  • The previous meeting’s minutes were accepted as distributed.

Campus plan for IPv4 (Erick Engelke, Jason Testart)

  • With Engineering building more buildings, more IP addresses are being used
  • A plan needs to be developed in order to have more IP addresses available with the increase of campus buildings
    • All machines and machine types (e.g. office, student, server, research) will need to be determined first
    • Would like to use NATs or private server space for client subnets; keeping everything in Infoblox would not be ideal

Comments and discussion

  • Smaller subnet requests can be completed now, but larger requests will require further investigation as there are not a lot of IPs available at the moment
  • The plan is to create a working group to brainstorm steps that need to be taken (e.g. at what level should we classify, how should machines be categorized, should NAT be used or not, should a web proxy be used, what other features/options should be considered)
  • Will want to use a separate asset management tool, not Infoblox
  • CTSC members should contact Steve and Erick if there is someone in their faculty who should be involved in the working group

Other Business/Roundtable

Technology Integrated Services - IST, Steve

  • TIS is going to start doing Wi-Fi surveys for buildings that have been converted to Cisco APs
  • TIS will require access to labs and offices to use testing devices
    • TIS staff will work with building coordinators to gain access (e.g. Plant Ops)
    • Will not go into any department areas that access is prohibited for
    • Notice will be given to CTSC where applicable

Engineering, Erick

  • Engineering developed a tool to graph network IO and signal strength
    • Shows rogues, upload speed, download speed and errors
    • Developed using inexpensive data collectors (~$100)
  • Erick to share specs with CTSC via email after the meeting
  • IST is also looking to acquire a few testers for campus groups to use in the future

Information Security Services - IST, Jason

  • Board of Governors security presenation slides were shared with CTSC on Teams - any questions or comments?
  • During the Board of Governors presentation, most people were concerned about ransomware
    • There was some discussion about cyber insurance
      • Cyber insurance is relatively new and hard for institutions to implement; cyber insurance companies are losing money because of a high number of payouts
