Biography
Xuanyu (Nada) Nan is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo. She holds a Master of Philosophy in Linguistics from the University of Macau and a Bachelor of Management in Public Affairs Management, with a focus on sport management, from Beijing Sport University. Beyond academia, Nada loves travelling and has visited many countries. She enjoys exploring new places and learning about different cultures.
Research interests
Critical tourism studies; language and leisure; human-nature relationships; inclusion and participation in tourism and leisure.
Nada's master’s research examined language choice and language ideologies in Tibetan–Mandarin bilingual football contexts in Yushu, Qinghai. Research and practical experience in Tibetan regions of Qinghai, alongside work in community services and youth sport, have informed an interest in cross-cultural communication and the experiences of linguistically diverse communities. Bringing together perspectives from sociolinguistics and sport management, Nada is interested in how language and cultural meanings shape participation and inclusion in tourism and leisure.
