A Tale of Two Taxes: Does Corporate Income Tax Avoidance Undermine the Role of Environmental Taxation in Promoting Environmental Sustainability?
Kaishu Wu:
The paper titled "A Tale of Two Taxes: Does Corporate Income Tax Avoidance Undermine the Role of Environmental Taxation in Promoting Environmental Sustainability?" has received funding support from the CSPM. This paper finds that high polluting firms in China increase their income tax avoidance in response to the Environmental Protection Tax Law enacted in 2018, consistent with firms balancing the financial burden imposed by environmental taxes with increased income tax avoidance. Firms with increased income tax avoidance fail to show improved environmental performance, which effectively weakens the efficacy of environmental legislations.
