Hola! My name is Valeria and I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies in Sustainability Management at the University of Waterloo. I got my Architecture degree in 2018 from the Tamaulipas Institute of Higher Education (IEST-Anahuac) in the city of Tampico, Mexico. In 2017, I had the opportunity to collaborate as a research intern at the Department of City Planning at the University of Manitoba.

As an architect, I was trained to understand what people really need in their daily lives in order to provide solutions and ideas translated into spaces, in small and large-scale. Now at the Faculty of Environment, I am fascinated by how different disciplines can join efforts and combine expertise to address social and environmental issues and create good conditions for communities, by prioritizing people’s well-being, environment preservation, and enhancing sustainable development.

I am currently conducting research on sustainable and responsible tourism planning as a tool for sustainable development and the prospects and challenges of small-scale fishing communities, by exploring promising trends in fisheries management and new roles of fishermen in the tourism sector.
