Systematic and Scoping Review Series: Systematic Search Methods

Systematic and scoping reviews require a rigorous and reproducible search methodology. This workshop, a combination of presentation and interactive activities, outlines the expectations of a systematic search and provides practical experience in developing a search methodology which meets systematic standards.

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

- Understand the characteristics of a “systematic” search

- Learn strategies to build, organize and construct a comprehensive search strategy in academic databases

- Learn a systematic approach to identify grey literature

- Understand the search documentation process and reporting standards

Learn the basics of obtaining data from the web using a browser plugin. In this workshop, a combination of presentation, hands-on demonstration and question & answer period, web scraping will be explored within the broader context of gathering data to answer a research question. No prior coding knowledge or web scraping skills are required to participate.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze a website’s structure to plan the best way to scrape its data

  • Understand web scraping in the context of the research process

  • Use a browser plugin to obtain data from a website

This virtual training session will cover all the tools you need to create a 60 second video, including: GRADflix guidelines, copyright considerations, video best practices, scripting, technology tools, software options, other resources, and communicating for a non-specialist audience. Facilitators assume you have no prior knowledge about creating videos.

DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service is pleased to present an information session for faculty, postdocs and PhD students at the University of Waterloo on Thursday, November 7th between 2:30 and 3:30 pm in Environment 1, Room 221.
