Abstract

Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in Canada. Relative to the burden of disease, mental health is under-researched. However, Statistics Canada has included questions about symptoms of common mental disorders in numerous surveys, including the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, the National Population Health Survey, the Canadian Community Health Survey, and the Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth. This presentation will describe a series of studies on predictors and consequences of poor mental health (primarily depression and suicidality), and whether there are modifiable factors that may reduce the burden of mental illness.
