Digital Tools and Methods: An Introduction to Web Scraping

Learn the basics of obtaining data from the web using a browser plugin. In this workshop, a combination of presentation, hands-on demonstration and question & answer period, web scraping will be explored within the broader context of gathering data to answer a research question. No prior coding knowledge or web scraping skills are required to participate.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze a website’s structure to plan the best way to scrape its data

  • Understand web scraping in the context of the research process

  • Use a browser plugin to obtain data from a website

This virtual training session will cover all the tools you need to create a 60 second video, including: GRADflix guidelines, copyright considerations, video best practices, scripting, technology tools, software options, other resources, and communicating for a non-specialist audience. Facilitators assume you have no prior knowledge about creating videos.

Elections in 2024 to the European Parliament and in three German provinces have cemented the success of the far-right Alternative for Germany and witnessed the rise of other non-mainstream parties. The German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) alumni organizations in the US and Canada, in conjunction with the Waterloo Centre for German Studies, are pleased to sponsor a panel discussion that brings together leading scholars in the field for an in-depth examination of these recent elections that have changed Germany’s political landscape.

This event will honor Indigenous Veterans Day with a fireside panel discussion featuring Elder Myeengun Henry who will lead a discussion that will invite Indigenous veterans to share their experiences.
This discussion aims to bring awareness to the unique history of Indigenous veterans, highlighting their stories and honoring their legacy. The focus is on the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Indigenous peoples in various military and peacekeeping roles throughout history.

WISE PUBLIC LECTURE

Join us for a discussion on the environmental, social, and economic impacts of renewable energy technologies. The integration of renewable energy sources and advanced technologies faces several challenges, including environmental concerns such as land use and habitat disruption, social issues like community acceptance and equity in energy access, economic factors involving the cost of technology and market viability, and regulatory hurdles that encompass policy frameworks and compliance requirements. The presentation will address these challenges to accelerate the adoption of renewables, necessitating collaboration among stakeholders to create a supportive framework for growth.
