Developing strategies and resources to support patient and family engagement with racialized immigrant older adults

In the summer of 2021 we completed 19 pilot interviews with racialized older adults in Southern Ontario. With a team of interpreters and multilingual students, we are presently doing baseline data collection with older adults and family caregivers in: Hindi, Punjabi & Urdu (Fall Term 2021) Arabic (Winter Term 2022) Cantonese & Mandarin (Spring Term 2022). Future work will also include interviews with health care providers and medical interpreters, followed by co-design sessions to develop solutions with all stakeholders.

After completing initial interviews with 19 racialized older adults in Southern Ontario, we are furthering our research by conducting baseline data collection with older adults and caregivers in Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Cantonese, and Mandarin. We are assisted by a team of interpreters and multilingual students. Future work will also include interviews with health care providers and medical interpreters, followed by co-design sessions to develop solutions with all stakeholders. Community partners for this work include South Asian Seniors of Waterloo Region, Muslim Social Services, Reception House, & Central Ontario Chinese Cultural Centre.
