Announcing new global health innovation course

Thursday, August 16, 2018

At the Global Health Policy and Innovation Research Centre (GHPI), we are excited to announce the launch of a brand new course called Global Health Innovation that will be offered in the School of Public Health and Health Systems, University of Waterloo from fall 2018.

The course will be available to fourth year undergraduate and graduate students in public health and is directly connected with the GHPI mandate to provide training and mentoring to create effective health leadership that meets current and future global health challenges.

Innovation is critical to the design, implementation and execution of relevant solutions to pressing global health challenges today. These are those challenges that affect the world's poorest living on less than $2 a day, and the majority of the world’s population, living on $2 to $8 per day.

Students in this course will acquire skills in effective problem definition, the conceptualization and creation of prototype solutions, partnering across disciplines and sectors to improve access, adoption, delivery and scaling. Learning and innovating from concept to community will be guided by class discussions, workshops, selected cases studies, and guest lectures.

The delivery of this course will be facilitated by Rohit Ramchandani, PhD, a University of Waterloo Applied Health Sciences alumnus (BSc '04). Ramchandani has extensive personal experience with the design and delivery of innovative health solutions. He was involved with a social innovation to deliver life-saving medicines to far-flung, rural communities in Zambia through the Coca Cola supply chain.
