JFI would like to welcome its newest members to the management team:
Dr. Carin Holroyd is the President, Japan Studies Association of Canada, and Associate Professor of Political Studies, University of Saskatchewan. She holds degrees from the University of British Columbia, Chaminade University/Sophia University and the University of Waikato. She has written extensively on Japanese innovation and political economy. Her forthcoming book, Green Japan (University of Toronto Press), examines government plans to promote the commercialization of environmental technologies.

Dr. Ken Coates is the Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation, Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan. He has undertaken extensive comparative research on the challenges facing rural areas and small towns. Ken was the two-term President of the Japan Studies Association of Canada and has worked extensively on digital media in East Asia. He has published a series of books on Japanese innovation and has worked extensively on rural development studies. His most recent studies are, with Dr. Carin Holroyd, is The Global Digital Economy and a study of Indigenous policies in Canada. View Dr. Ken Coates' full profile.

Recent Events
As part of the JFI Speaker Series, on October 6, Mr. Aoyagi spoke at a guest lecture at the Japan Foundation Toronto, titled "Introduction to Kabuki theater: Tamasaburo performs Akoya."
On November 24, 2016 at Renison University College, Dr. Masayuki Tadokoro presented "Multiethnic Japan? Increasing Presence of Non-ethnic Japanese in Japan." Dr. Masayuki Tadokoro is a Professor of International Relations at Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. His primary field is international political economy, but he also works on Japanese foreign and security policy. Currently he is working on international politics of population movement across borders.

Member News & Activities
Dr. Ken Coates is continuing his work on the potential use of scientific and technological innovation to address the challenges facing rural areas around the world. In addition to his research work, which includes substantial focus on Japan, Ken is making efforts to connect Japanese companies and research groups with northern and rural communities.
David W. Edgington is currently completing field work in Fukushima Japan and Chernobyl Ukraine. Recently, he presented at the following conference:
- October 2016: "Geographies of Exclusion: Fukushima Dai-ichi at Five, Chernobyl #4 at 30", Presentation to the 2016 JSAC Conference on "Globalizing Japan", held at Centre for Japanese Research, University of British Columbia.
