Finance programs in the Faculty of Mathematics

We're going beyond

At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, we offer programs that focus on the math behind the financials, and we’re going beyond to include programs that will prepare our students for the future of fintech.

Our faculty has grown to include more programs, majors and specializations relating to the financial industry, including our new Master’s of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program and a Data Science major for undergraduates. We’ve welcomed programs like Financial Analysis and Risk Management and cultivated Mathematical Finance into an elite major for our undergrad students.

Whether students are planning for a professional designation, dominating databases, or building their business acumen, we have a program unique to their interests.

Undergraduate programs

Computing and Financial Management (CFM)

Financial technology is a growing industry that needs professionals who understand complicated financial concepts and who have the technical skills to create the software tools needed to solve its complex problems. The CFM program is the only one of its kind in Canada to combine a major in computer science and a major in financial management in one degree. As a co-op only program, it also gives students an opportunity to get real-world work experience related to their field of study.

Financial Analysis and Risk Management (FARM)

We’re preparing students to be professionals with business savvy, analytical thinking, and a strong mathematical background because it’s what the world of finance requires. FARM, now offered completely online as well, allows students to choose to pursue a career in financial analysis or risk management. When students combine courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science with corporate finance, micro and macroeconomics, and other business-related courses, they’ll be prepared for their Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Professional Risk Manager (PRM) designation. We’re proud to say that the FARM program is the first PRMIA accredited Bachelor’s degree program in North America.

Math/CPA

This co-op only program helps students get on the fast track with one of the most technologically advanced accounting programs in Canada. Accountants increasingly depend on computer technology, statistical procedures for auditing and forecasting, and mathematical techniques such as operations research. Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy (Math/ CPA) is the only accounting program in Canada leading to a Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) degree. In addition, students can specialize their studies with our Finance option.

Mathematical Finance

Mathematical Finance is an elite program designed for students with outstanding mathematical skills who want a career in high-level quantitative finance. As one of the most advanced undergraduate finance programs in the world, we offer courses in corporate finance, real analysis, asset liability management, and forecasting. The program delivers solid mathematical training and a modern understanding of the financial market to prepare students for the broad field of banking and finance.

BMath and BCS degrees in Data Science

Every day, huge amounts of data are generated by business, scientific, and social activity taking place all around us. With data coming from sensors, digital images, streaming video, satellite and medical imagery, and from interactions with cloud computing, data-driven approaches to decision making are being applied in areas as diverse as medicine, business, advertising, and entertainment. To make sense of it all, students looking to graduate with a degree in data science will take courses in computer science and statistics, and learn the methods used to analyze large data sets in order to predict and improve business strategy, products and services, marketing campaigns, medicine, and public health and safety.

Graduate programs

Master’s of Actuarial Science (MActSc)

Our Master’s of Actuarial Science just celebrated its 10th anniversary. A professional program, it’s designed to develop both technical and business skills in the context of the modern risk management environment. It’s the only program in North America accredited with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFA) in the UK. Covering material in more depth than the professional exams, it allows our students with strong average grades to be exempt from up to 10 IFA examinations, which are recognized around the world.

Master’s of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

The Master’s of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is a new coursework program to provide strong core training so that graduates can adapt easily to changes and new demands from industry. We’re looking to develop a broad academic and practical literacy in computer science, statistics, and optimization, with relevance in data science and artificial intelligence, so that students are able to critically select and apply appropriate methods and techniques to extract relevant and important information from data.

Master’s of Mathematics in Actuarial Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Actuarial Science

Actuaries play key roles in insurance companies and other financial institutions, in governments, and in teaching and research. The MMath in Actuarial Science provides training to enter a career as a professional actuary or for the PhD program. PhD graduates typically enter academia or work in the private sector.

Master’s of Quantitative Finance

In 2019, the Master’s of Quantitative Finance was ranked #1 in Canada by Risk.net’s Quant Finance Master Guide. This professional program focuses on the fundamental disciplines of mathematics, statistics, econometrics, computer science, and finance. It provides the analytical tools to solve practical problems in the complex and rapidly evolving world of today's financial industry. Graduates from the Master of Quantitative Finance are equipped for positions with financial institutions, corporations, and government regulatory organizations.
