Nowadays the complex process of drug discovery has become a highly competitive and multidisciplinary area. In order to succeed in either academia or industry it is imperative that student gains hands on expertise in diverse areas in a short period of time. Often this can be a daunting task. Our goal is to train students with tools to succeed. The major research focus in our lab is “Medicinal/Bioorganic Chemistry” an ever changing multidisciplinary area. The objective is to train students in diverse research areas shown below:
- Rational drug design aided by molecular modeling techniques
- Small molecule synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry, including method development
- Solid phase peptide synthesis of bioactive peptides/peptidomimics
- Acquire knowledge and skills in analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
- Development of high-throughput biochemical screening protocols to discover lead candidates
