Laura Hug and Emmanuelle Roy featured on TFO children’s series “Effet Domino” to talk methane emissions from landfills
Dr. Laura Hug, Principal Investigator, was invited to appear on the TFO series “Effet Domino” as the real-world expert to speak about waste in landfills. She appears on Episode 11 on “Le mystérieux bac vert” or “The mysterious green bin”.
The episode follows Laura as she heads to a landfill with project team member Emmanuelle Roy to collect soil samples for measuring methane levels and identifying soil microbes. Laura explains how “hungry” microbes eat the methane coming from landfills, while Emmanuelle offers her perspective on working at landfills and in microbiology as a future career. The episode then follows Laura and Emmanuelle back to their lab at the University of Waterloo to run analyses on the microbes.
The series is designed for kids between 9-12 years old and aims to inspire them to change the world and take care of our planet, one small action at a time. Each episode contains a real-life hero who inspire and show kids that one person can make a difference and cause a domino effect. TFO is the French-language broadcaster in Ontario and produces innovative educational and cultural programs for youth, parents and educators.
