  • 2007 Ernest C. Manning Award of Distinction, one of the Canada’s most prestigious innovation prizes.
  • Inaugural Ontario Premier’s Catalyst Award in 2007 for “Innovator of the Year”. (Pro- ceeds of the award were donated entirely to the University of Waterloo to create an annual En-hui Yang Engineering Research Innovation Award eligible to all Engineering Faculty at Waterloo to encourage and support research and innovation by Waterloo Engineering faculty.)
  • Products based on my early inventions and commercialized by my previous company, SlipStream (now a subsidiary of BlackBerry) received the 2006 Ontario Global Traders Provincial  Award.
  • Recipient of the 2004 outstanding performance award, University of Waterloo.
  • Research accomplishments were featured in 2003 as one of the fi success stories (for Industry Canada) from the Canada Research Chair Programs.
  • One paper was nominated for the 2012 Best Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.

  • Recipient of 2002 Ontario Distinguished Researcher Award.
  • Recipient of 2000 Ontario Premier’s Research Excellence Award for research contribu- tions to information theory and multimedia compression.
  • Recipient of Marsland Award for Research Excellence, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, September 2000.
  • A research project on grammar based coding and its applications to wireless and multi- media communications was highlighted in the news release of CITO (Communications and Information Technology Ontario).
