As technologies, like artificial intelligence, continue to advance innovation in the workforce, University of Waterloo co-op students are playing a crucial role in digital transformation.  

In 2022, the Employer Impact Award recipients utilized student talent to help feed the world, digitize the insurance landscape, and gain international perspectives.  

On Saturday, September 23, thousands of people from cities across Canada, came together to walk and bike in support of some of the most vulnerable people in our community during the annual Ride for Refuge event — a family-friendly, in-person fundraising ride/walk in support of charities that help people seeking hope, safety and freedom. 

In April this year, the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering Outreach team launched a free community outreach program called Travelling STEM. Over the summer, the pilot program visited Indigenous communities across Ontario to share exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) possibilities with youth from kindergarten to grade 11 in their home communities.  

In a world experiencing rapid technological advancement and frenzied shifts in the economic landscape, it’s imperative that creatives, innovators and industry leaders come together and address the pressing issues Canada and our world faces.

Offering a raw, unfiltered look at the catastrophic ripple effects of overfishing, the University of Waterloo held a special screening of the documentary CAUGHT on September 13 at the Modern Languages Theatre.The documentary screening prompted students, faculty and alumni to reflect on the ways they can contribute to ocean sustainability. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is recognized annually on September 30th. The University of Waterloo commemorated the day on Friday, September 29th, along with a commitment polishing ceremony to affirm the University’s commitment to decolonization, indigenization and reconciliation.  

Monitoring seaweed growth has the potential to accelerate regenerative seaweed farming and ocean restoration, and scale blue carbon initiatives, all presenting important opportunities in the fight against climate change.  

To bring key data about what’s happening below the surface above water, Velocity company Coastal Carbon received $1.6 million in funding from Canada’s Ocean Supercluster (OSC) to undertake the AI-Driven Sensors for Seaweed Measurement Project. 

University of Waterloo is leading the charge in Canada's electric aviation evolution.

Backed by Government of Canada funding, the experts at the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) and Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC) achieved a historic milestone when their tiny, two-seater Pipistrel Velis Electro made its inaugural flight. The Velis Electro is certified to fly in Europe and is being evaluated with an end goal to become Canada’s first type-certified electric plane.
