It has been 33 years since a gunman shot and killed 14 women at the École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989. Below, two Waterloo Engineering alumni and a current student reflect on what the attack continues to mean for them as women in engineering.
‘We must never grow complacent’
The community at Waterloo Engineering came together for Giving Tuesday on Nov. 29 to generously support two funds that provide our students with a dynamic and diverse learning environment that prepares them for successful careers in a complex world.
More than 80 donors supported the Engineering Student Teams Fund with over $22,000 in donations.
More than 90 donors supported The Equity Fund with a total of $27,000 in donations.
As students at Waterloo head into the final exam season, and with the holidays fast approaching, the University is renewing its focus on sharing both the mental health supports that are currently available for the community and the continual work we do to improve the options that we offer.
Born in Mexico, Dr. Sandra Lopez-Rocha has been working in the field of intercultural learning since the mid 1990s, at a time when the field experienced exponential growth. Since then, she has accumulated a wealth of both professional and academic knowledge on the subject matter. After completing an MA in Intercultural Communication and a PhD in Language, Literacy and Culture at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, she ambitiously pursued a second PhD in Social Anthropology in the United Kingdom.

December 6, 1989. That day, which cast a shadow on all our campuses, is forever etched in my memory. I was a recent engineering student graduate from McGill University when 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal in an antifeminist mass shooting. Twelve of the women killed were engineering students. All engineers around the world were forever impacted by this day and the loss of their future colleagues and peers.
Unnecessary use and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobials are increasing the serious problem of antimicrobial resistance. Over time bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change, and as a result, drug resistance can occur where infections that were previously easily treated become difficult to treat.
Antimicrobial resistance ranks among the top ten global public health threats, according to the World Health Organization.
The University of Waterloo announces, with deep sadness, the death of Ethan Dhoum. Ethan was a second-year Science student.
Ethan is fondly remembered by his friends and classmates and those in his community in Waterloo, and at home as a kind person who was always helping others. He was active with the Malton Aquatic club.
Ethan’s family will be holding a public memorial and funeral service on Wednesday, November 23:

This fall term students in Waterloo’s Theatre and Performance program are working alongside professional artists, faculty, and staff, to produce a meta-theatrical experience that challenges everybody to ponder tough questions about the meaning of life.
