In the first study to consider the long-term evolution of the rivers that flow beneath glaciers, researchers have new insights into the future of Antarctica’s melting ice that may change the way climate scientists predict the effects of a warming planet.

Six researchers at the University of Waterloo have been awarded more than $7.5 million in funding to support their research.  

The funding is made possible through the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, which invests up to $311 million annually to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo are envisioning the future of sustainable aviation – and it’s electric. With support from the Government of Canada, the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) has been testing batteries that power one of Canada’s electric planes over the past two years. Their findings show these batteries perform effectively under the country's demanding and ever-changing weather conditions.

A study led by a University of Waterloo researcher has learned that climate change is increasing the potential for algal blooms in the United Kingdom’s River Thames despite a four-decade-long decline in phosphorus loads. The study completed a detailed analysis of the river’s 150-year water quality record to learn this information.
