Recovering Black legacies in Waterloo’s past

It’s not rare for the University of Waterloo’s archivists to feel like they’re looking for a needle in a haystack. But for one particular project, they weren’t sure what was inside the haystack.  

The Ujima Black History Month project seemed simple enough: create informational posters featuring Black faculty and students from Waterloo’s past. In reality, it was difficult to know where to start.

Improving access to cancer care

Patients receiving oral anticancer therapy are receiving better support thanks to a Waterloo Pharmacy alum and a team at the Waterloo Regional Health Centre (WRHN) Cancer Centre who have launched the Medication Assessment by Pharmacist (MAP) clinic.

Jackie Diebold (BScPhm '14, PharmD ’21), a clinical pharmacist, was backed by interim director of pharmacy Anthony Amadio (BScPhm ’11) oncology pharmacy co-ordinator Anna Granic and pharmacy manager Kathy Planinac to implement the new model to improve cancer care delivery while optimizing each clinicians’ skill set.

Home is where the heart is

Most alumni visit campus to relive memories, but for Candy Cheung (BES ’09) and Emmanuel Poon (BA ’10) Waterloo became the setting for something new. When they got engaged, they chose the campus where they first met as the backdrop for their milestone.

“We travelled all the way from Hong Kong to visit family and attend my sister’s graduation, and we thought, why not add a trip to Waterloo. It felt meaningful to us.”

Co-op student gets the chance to support Canadian Olympic athletes

Velocity unveils new Indigenous mural

More than a year after Velocity opened its doors inside the University of Waterloo’s Innovation Arena, its halls hum with the energy of students and founders arriving each day ready to imagine, build and transform. Ideas take shape within Velocity’s collaborative community, evolving in programs, spaces and shared labs before beginning their commercialization journey into the world. But during all this momentum, one essential element had been missing — a visual reminder of the land and community that makes this innovation possible.
