WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, October 23, 2013) – For every dollar that the Ontario government spends on the University of Waterloo, the university returns nearly nine times that amount in economic impacts to the province, according to a new independent report.

The report, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers examines the institution’s role in driving prosperity, also reveals that Waterloo generates more than $2.6 billion in total annual spending impacts and more than 20,000 jobs in Ontario.

The University of Waterloo has named its Student Design Centre – where students fall “in love with engineering” – in honour of Adel Sedra, former dean of engineering.

More than 120 young women interested in learning about rewarding career opportunities in engineering will attend the 8^th annual Go ENG Girl at the University of Waterloo this Saturday.

The event for girls in Grades 7 to 10 and their parents is part of a provincial initiative to spark interest in engineering at a time when girls are beginning to think about their future careers and choosing courses that will prepare them. On the same day, 14 other universities across Ontario will also hold Go ENG Girl activities for more than 1,000 girls and their parents.

An award-winning biochemist whose discovery solved a 100-year-old mystery in cell biology shared his insights to an audience at the University of Waterloo today as part of the Gairdner Foundation’s National Program lecture series.

Professor Kim Nasmyth of the University of Oxford shared his first–hand knowledge and expertise in biomedical research. He won the 2007 Canada Gairdner International Award for his discovery of cohesin, helping us understand cell division and how errors in this process relate to cancer and other genetic diseases. 

WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, October 18, 2013) – The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo has named its Student Design Centre in honour of former dean, Adel Sedra.

The centre was named the Sedra Student Design Centre at a ceremony at Waterloo today.

The 20,000-square-foot Sedra Student Design Centre is the largest facility of its kind in North America. It is home to more than 20 teams of students, who compete internationally and work on design projects including a new Formula One car, an autonomous robot, a flying quadrotor and a hybrid vehicle.

GUELPH, Ont. (Thursday, October 17, 2013) – The City of Guelph’s Community Wellbeing Initiative has received a 2013 Impact Award at this year’s CIC Impact Summit in Chicago.

The City and Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) were selected by the Community Indicators Consortium leadership to receive the award which celebrates projects that demonstrate the power of indicators to drive positive community change.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, October 17, 2013) – The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo will name the world-class Student Design Centre in honour of former dean, Adel Sedra.

The centre, which was completed in 2010, will be named the Sedra Student Design Centre at a ceremony in Engineering 5 tomorrow.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation has recognized a professor at the University of Waterloo for her work in the area of global environmental and food policy by awarding her a prestigious Trudeau fellowship.

Professor Jennifer Clapp, from the Department of Environment and Resource Studies at Waterloo, conducts research that looks at the effect of global trade, financial markets and investment on world hunger and the environment. She is Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and Sustainability.
