WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, March 14, 2011) - Lt.-Gen. (Ret.) and Senator Roméo Dallaire, who commanded the UN forces in Rwanda during the genocide of 1994, will give a public talk this week at the University of Waterloo.

Dallaire will deliver the arts student union’s 2011 keynote lecture on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre, located in the J. G. Hagey Hall of the Humanities.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, March 11, 2011) - Feridun Hamdullahpur has been appointed the sixth president of the University of Waterloo.

His appointment was approved Friday by the university’s senate and board of governors and announced by Robert Harding, chair of the board and chair of the presidential nominating committee.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, March 10, 2011) - High school students, their parents and friends can find out about campus life when the University of Waterloo holds its annual March break open house next week.

The open house will take place as the decision on where to attend university in the fall looms over high school students across the province. At Waterloo, prospective students will participate in information sessions and activities related to undergraduate studies.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, March 1, 2011) - More than 60 girl guides are expected to qualify for science and technology engineering badges during the first annual Ontario Girl Guide Badge Day event to be held at the University of Waterloo campus during National Engineering Month.

On Saturday, March 5, girl guides and their leaders will visit Waterloo Engineering and meet with women engineers while learning firsthand about engineering careers. They will also take part in hands-on activities to meet the requirements for earning their engineering badge.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011) - The University of Waterloo’s kinesiology department will host the third annual brain bee for high school students in Waterloo Region and surrounding areas on Saturday.

The contest, open to Grade 9 to 12 students, is one of 13 brain bees scheduled across Canada this winter and spring. It raises awareness about neuroscience by challenging students to answer questions about the brain.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011) - The University of Waterloo won a gold medal last week from an international organization for its extensive institutional identity program, which sparked new designs for souvenirs, letterhead, recruitment publications, posters and web pages.

The medal was presented in Baltimore during the annual meeting of District II of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. At the same event, Waterloo received several awards for a program aimed at involving alumni in student recruitment.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011) - The successful rescue efforts in last year's Chilean mine disaster will be explored during a free public lecture at the University of Waterloo next week.

Maurice Dusseault and Steve Evans, professors in the department of earth and environmental sciences, will examine the geoengineering triumph in a lecture entitled Disaster and Deliverance: The Chilean Mine Rescue.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011) - Educational reformer Mary Poplin will next week discuss how religion coexists with the secular world during the annual Pascal Lectures on Christianity and the University.

Poplin, author of Finding Calcutta and Voices from the Inside: A Report on Schooling from Inside the Classroom, will give a public lecture, Christianity: How the Religious Worldview Became a Secret. It takes place Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre, located in the University of Waterloo's J. G Hagey Hall of the Humanities.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Jan. 10, 2011) - Grade 10 students and their parents can get a head start on planning for a university education by attending an evening event at the University of Waterloo on Thursday, Jan. 20.

Grade 10 Family Night will help students understand what they can do in Grade 10 to prepare for applying to any of Ontario's universities. Topics include courses to take in high school and resources to learn about the hundreds of university programs offered in Ontario.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Dec. 6, 2010) - More than 1,000 Ontario high school students will learn about health and movement at the University of Waterloo's Kinesiology Lab Days taking place weekdays from Dec. 7 to 16.

The program, hosted by Waterloo's department of kinesiology, was established 37 years ago to showcase the relatively new field of kinesiology at the time - the science of human movement. Since then, the University of Waterloo has established itself as an international leader in kinesiology research and education.
