Every March since 2016, students from Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy have been volunteering and visiting Region of Waterloo schools to educate the younger generation on what pharmacists do during Pharmacy Appreciation Month (PAM).

This year during PAM, 30 pharmacy students volunteered and presented to more than 400 elementary students across nine schools in the region.

On March 27, the University of Waterloo community came together to welcome an Eagle Staff to our institution. The day began with a Sunrise Ceremony followed by a formal introduction ceremony held at Federation Hall. The ceremony began with drumming from the Cedar Hill Singers and a procession, followed by a prayer of thanks led by Elder Bill Woodworth. Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, Elder Myeengun Henry, introduced the sacred Eagle Staff on behalf of the University’s Indigenous community, marking an important step in Waterloo’s journey towards reconciliation.

During high school in the Waterloo Region, Rachel Wormald attended Go ENG Girl, an outreach program hosted by the University of Waterloo that introduces grade 7 to 10 girls to the world of engineering.

She was immediately hooked.

The University of Waterloo rose three spots in the rankings of the best schools for computer science to take 22nd globally.

In electrical and electronic engineering, Waterloo rose four spots to 29th. Rounding out Waterloo’s best showing in the rankings was a finish of 43rd globally in mathematics.

The rankings are the latest annual release of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which rank universities globally in 54 academic disciplines.

Creating an accessible university is about planning and designing a campus and a student experience that is barrier free. Accessibility is in some respects an approach that takes into account the needs of all.

In close cooperation with the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association and the Glow Centre, the University of Waterloo is making campus more inclusive for Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Non-Conforming members of the campus community by increasing access to all-gender washrooms.

Many universities struggle with dismantling systemic racism and bias in their policies, practices and culture.  In response to this challenge, the University of Waterloo created an anti-racism unit — the first-of-its-kind academic support unit. Under the leadership of Jennisha Wilson, director of anti-racism within the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-racism Office (EDI-RO), the unit identifies and addresses systemic racism in the University's policies, procedures and practices.

The Waterloo School of Pharmacy implemented a mass vaccination clinic for COVID-19 immunization in 2021.

With many multidisciplinary teams working together in an environment not built for such a complex clinical system, researchers at the University of Waterloo created an app to support front-line workers. The app streamlined information flow to help solve logistical challenges that arose.

Welcoming Ukrainian refugees, supporting out-of-this-world discoveries and creating more equitable research practices are just a few of the many achievements of the 2022 Co-op Students of the Year.
