By Dani Stock Office of AdvancementOver the past year, faculty, staff and retiree donors funded important projects aimed at enhancing the student experience on campus — initiatives like improving mental health awareness, encouraging equitable participation in co-op, enriching the Library’s resources and so much more.
Among the many student-focused projects completed in 2022, the University celebrated a major milestone: the grand opening of the newly expanded Student Life Centre (SLC) and Physical Activities Complex (PAC). More than five years in the making, the 63,000-square-foot expansion opened in late 2021. The addition is situated to the west of BMH Green and connected to the original SLC, PAC and Math and Computer (MC) buildings.
The expanded space is a direct response to students’ expressed need for more social, study, dining and recreation space. The proposal was put forward by the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA), and construction broke ground in May 2017.
The expansion provides more space for activities that improve the student experience, offering new facilities and resources to support students physically, socially, spiritually and academically. New features include:
With ongoing support from donors like you, we can continue to provide students with enhanced programming, support and facilities that help them reach their highest potential. Thank you for your generosity!
With support from the Retirees Bursary Fund, Nigerian PhD candidate in Civil Engineering, Kay Awe (PhD Candidate), is able to concentrate on his research and family while pursuing his education in Canada.
Hanna Freitas' (Class of ’25) co-op at Drayton Entertainment is funded by donors, providing hands-on experience and supporting valuable arts education.
Monthly donations provide dependable funding to support innovative programs like the Waterloo Experience Accelerate Program, helping students acquire in-demand skills through work-integrated learning.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
