Karim S. Karim (BASc '99, PhD '03) is the associate vice-president of Commercialization and Entrepreneurship at the University of Waterloo and a professor of electrical and computer engineering. With a distinguished career that includes co-founding the Waterloo medical imaging spin-off KA Imaging, Karim highlights the University’s impact and vision behind its Innovation Arena.

Sukh Singh (BASc ’12) co-founded Ground News, a media platform designed to offer users a comprehensive view of news coverage across the political spectrum.

Electric Vehicles will now be able to go from zero battery power to an 80 per cent charge thanks to Researchers at the University of Waterloo who made a breakthrough in lithium-ion battery design to enable this extremely fast charging. 15 minutes is much faster than the current industry standard of nearly an hour, even at fast-charging stations.  

Batteries made using this new design are also able to withstand more charges – up to 800 cycles, a feat not possible with current EV batteries.

Kwaku Owusu Twum’s (PhD and MBET in progress) entrepreneurial journey from Ghana to Waterloo is nothing short of inspiring. Alongside his co-founder, Daniel Buston Yankey, Twum is building Mapmate, a digital platform transforming the agricultural landscape for small-scale farmers.

Twelve University of Waterloo researchers have been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers™ 2024 list from Clarivate. The list identifies individual researchers and scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research.  

Researchers named on the Highly Cited Researchers™ list are those whose publications rank in the top 1 per cent of citations from an international and wide-ranging network of citing authors.

The University of Waterloo has officially opened the Innovation Arena, a new collaboration space in the heart of Kitchener’s innovation district which will empower businesses, founders and community partners to engage researchers and entrepreneurs in solving local, national and global health challenges.

University of Waterloo alum and founder of Hyivy Health, Rachel Bartholomew (MBET ’14), returned to campus as a collaborator of Velocity and FemTech Canada’s Innovation Challenge, where more than 100 students formed teams to address three critical areas of women’s health: menopause, gynecological health and breast health.
