Women from UWaterloo named among Canada’s most powerful

Seven leaders in education, business and community who have ties to the University of Waterloo were named to a list of the most powerful women in Canada.

Women’s Executive Network (WXN) recently released the 2023 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winners, and Waterloo professors and alumni appear on the list celebrating women across Canada for their leadership and accomplishments.

Prize-winning research aims to better treat eye diseases

New shape makes TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023 list

Earlier this year, Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Craig S. Kaplan and his international colleagues David Smith, Joseph Myers and Chaim Goodman-Strauss discovered a single shape that tiles the plane — an infinite, two-dimensional surface — in a pattern that can never be made to repeat.

Now, that shape has been chosen by TIME magazine as one of the best inventions of 2023.

Waterloo names triple alum Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher as chancellor

Jagdeep Singh Bachher is chief investment officer and vice president of investments at the 10-campus University of California, where he oversees an investment portfolio of $164 billion. He is a triple alum of the University of Waterloo, having earned a Bachelor of Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering in 1993, a Master of Applied Science, Management Sciences in 1994, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences in 2000.

Honorary doctorates bring inspiration to graduating students

The University of Waterloo is proud to welcome three new honorary doctorates at our fall convocation ceremonies.  

Honorary doctorates are an integral part of each convocation ceremony as recipients are awarded for their substantial contributions to the Waterloo community, to their profession or to society at large.  

An honorary doctorate is one of the highest recognitions of the University and is bestowed to honour individuals whose character and extraordinary intellect, creativity and service to society set a standard of excellence that merits this honour.  

Mastercard and the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) at the University of Waterloo have announced a $550,000 partnership focused on research and talent advancement in cybersecurity. The funding will support projects that increase “Trust in Data” around:  fingerprinting, identification and validation, and data protection.
