Gah-Jone Won, a PhD candidate in Vision Science and Biology at the University of Waterloo was selected as the winner of the Ontario Provincial Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, yesterday.

Won’s research focuses on the development of a pharmaceutical treatment for presbyopia, an age-related condition that causes the eyes to lose the ability to focus on nearby objects. The treatment specifically targets and softens the crystalline lens in order to restore nearby vision.

Four University of Waterloo faculty members have been recognized for excellence in teaching with the University’s most prestigious teaching honour - the Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA).

The DTA consists of a citation along with a $1,500 award to be used by the recipients in support of any teaching activities. The awards will be presented by Mario Coniglio, associate vice-president, academic, at the June convocation ceremony.

John Cherry, a distinguished professor emeritus in the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Science, has been awarded the 2016 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize, a top international water prize worth more than $280,000 CDN. Organizers of Singapore International Water Week made the announcement March 21, in conjunction with World Water Day.

The University of Waterloo maintained a total of eleven subjects ranked in the top 100 in the world and three among the top 50, according to results published today.
