A collaborative project between the University of Waterloo and Maplesoft has won an award from the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE). The Excellence and Innovation in the Integration of Technology in Educational Practices/Collaboration Award acknowledges the Secondary School Courseware project, a free online courseware site designed to support high school math students and teachers in calculus and precalculus courses.

Seymour Schulich likes to tell a story about the most important $1,600 of his life.           

The money came to him in 1963 in the form of a scholarship to McGill University’s fledgling MBA program. Schulich’s undergraduate career— first in engineering, then in chemistry—had not been particularly distinguished, so he was pleasantly surprised when McGill offered him a $1,600 scholarship to come back for an MBA. 

Three professors from the University of Waterloo are among the list of several individuals with an affiliation with the University who were just named to the Order of Canada.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced 100 new appointments to the Order of Canada on July 1.

The Order has three levels: Companion, Officer and Member.

Lin Tan, a professor in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Waterloo, is collaborating with a leading software company to develop techniques that will accelerate software development and improve testing by detecting more defects automatically.

Devon Rizzo is graduating this spring with an engineering degree and a legacy of athletic achievement that includes gold medals and  participation in golf tournaments around the world.

“Golfing for the Warriors has helped me become a better leader. Being a team captain helped me both in the classroom and on the course,” said Rizzo.

University of Waterloo doctoral student Tahnee Prior was recently awarded a prestigious Trudeau Foundation scholarship for her work on the future of Arctic governance.

Every year four University of Waterloo professors are honoured with a Distinguished Teacher Award.  They will receive their awards at the 2015 Spring Convocation ceremonies being held between June 9-13.

We asked the four winners to reflect on how they engage millennial learners:

How do you go from being a new grad of an undergraduate engineering program  - to studying for a PhD at Princeton University?

Only one semester after its launch, the University of Waterloo’s new Grade 12 online math courseware is already being used by students and teachers in almost 90 countries - everywhere from Russia and China to the U.S. and Germany.

“We are thrilled to see the rapid spread of our courseware, and are glad that teachers and students are making use of it,” says Ian VanderBurgh, director of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC).
