Waterloo students could make the Hyperloop happen

by Shane Schick, Faculty of Engineering

It’s one thing to try and design a vehicle to travel on SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s proposed Hyperloop transportation system. It’s another to try and explain how it all works on live television in just a few minutes. Rather than make viewers struggle to imagine what that future will look like, Nicolas Achkarian managed it by using a visual metaphor from the past.

Professor Hammond is one of the world’s preeminent experts in tobacco control and nutrition labelling. He has helped international governments shape and advance critical public health policies. In addition to preparing reports for the US Surgeon General and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Hammond has drafted guidelines for the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and testified at the European Parliament on the new tobacco products directive. He is among the top 10 most published authors in the field of tobacco control.

Garbage, nutrients and tiny animals are pushed around, suspended in the world’s oceans by waves invisible to the naked eye according to a new 3-D model developed by mathematicians at the University of Waterloo.

David Deepwell, a graduate student, and Professor Marek Stastna in Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics have created a 3-D simulation that showcases how materials such phytoplankton, contaminants, and nutrients move within aquatic ecosystems via underwater bulges called mode-2 internal waves.

High school students gear up for electric vehicle challenge

by Media Relations

Students will face off in endurance races, driving the cars they have designed and built on a temporary racecourse set up on Waterloo’s East Campus.

Unique to Waterloo Engineering, the challenge involves engineering knowledge, experiential learning, fabrication skills, and teamwork. There are prizes for the best results on the racetrack, as well as excellence in engineering design and manufacturing.
