What is the carbon footprint of a hospital bed?

by Media Relations

Researchers from the University of Waterloo completed the first-ever assessment of a Canadian hospital to reveal its total environmental footprint and specific carbon emission hotspots.

Studying a hospital in British Columbia during its 2019 fiscal year, the researchers identified energy and water use and purchasing of medical products as the hospital’s primary hotspots, accounting for over half of the yearly footprint, totalling 3500-5000 tons of CO2 equivalent. One hospital bed is roughly equivalent to the carbon footprint of five Canadian households.

Create your own virtual world – no coding expertise necessary

by Media Relations

There is a massive world online forging human connection through virtualized forms of reality. Live-streaming services, like the popular content platform Twitch, allow creatives to stream to tens of thousands of viewers who watch live and interact with content creators.

As we approach the first anniversary of hurricane Fiona, hurricane Lee is tracking to hit the Atlantic coast.

Dr. Chris Houser, dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo, is an expert in coastal erosion. Alongside his citizen-science project, Coastie Canada, he studies how post-Fiona recovery is progressing and how this year’s storms will affect the already-damaged eastern coast of Canada.

Disrupting the myth of water abundance in Ontario

by Media Relations

Ontario may seem to be a water secure region, but new research out of the University of Waterloo challenges the myth of water abundance in the Great Lakes watershed.

Using a first-of-its-kind risk analysis, researchers connected water quality, quantity, regulations and public concern to obtain a more comprehensive picture of water security at the local level. The novel approach revealed that at least half of the studied watersheds had a moderate to high potential for risk.
