Convocation marks a significant milestone for University of Waterloo graduates. This year, 14 outstanding students have been chosen to represent the graduating Class of 2025.

Their selection as valedictorians demonstrates their dedication and creativity within their faculties. Below, they share parts of their academic journeys filled with inspiring tales of overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities for growth.

As climate risks such as floods, extreme heat, and wildfires grow, commercial buildings are increasingly vulnerable — creating uncertainty for both property owners and financial institutions around which measures are necessary to ensure resilience. Waterloo professor and WWII codebreaker Dr. William T. Tutte (1917-2002) is one of ten individuals being honored by Great Britain’s Royal Mail in a stamp series commemorating the 80^th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

Tutte’s stamp, which features his photograph in front of a multi-wheeled code machine, recognizes him for “Codebreaking the Lorenz cipher machine at Bletchley Park.”

WatSPEED, the University of Waterloo’s professional, and executive and corporate education arm, announced a multi-year partnership agreement with Progressive Generation (PG) Holding represented by PG Studios at the Education Global Exhibition (EDGEx) assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The partnership will offer co-branded animation certificate programs designed to equip students in Jordan and Saudi Arabia with the skills and knowledge to excel in competitive global markets.

The increasing integration of cars with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) means fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) will likely be a reality by 2050, if not sooner. These self-driving vehicles will not just operate with minimal human intervention, they will make “decisions” to adapt and react to changing situations on the road. Human drivers will literally take a back seat.
