It was a tremendous day to be part of the University of Waterloo, women in science and all of Canada as Associate Professor Donna Strickland was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics.

A week of wins for Waterloo

It was a big week - from celebrating Accelerator Centre's 10th anniversary to talking "No Fears, No Excuses" with Professor Larry Smith.

21st Century Education - my speech to the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto

Growing UWaterloo's international partnerships

Just before the end of March, I travelled to Singapore and China to meet some of UWaterloo's key partners in the region.

From entrepreneurs to volunteers, we all pitch in: April in review

As we come to the end of yet another term, I’m glad to be able to share with you some events and initiatives that took place on campus during the month of April so far. Furthermore, my monthly update is a chance for me to recognize a few of the many exceptional members of our community each month, whether they are faculty, staff, students, or alumni.

Waterloo has a spring in its step: March in review

Campus has been a busy, bustling place this month. There’s almost been too many events and initiatives to mention, but I want to capture some of them here.

On March 12, I stopped by the Student Life Centre to see the final structures constructed by some of our CanBuild participants. This is the second year of our campus-wide food drive, which is a partnership with the FEDS Student Food Bank and The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Attracting the best and brightest: February in review

As promised in our last update, I am pleased to provide to you our inaugural State of the University report. The report, Defining Tomorrow, is available both in print and in an enriched digital format. In today’s globally competitive post-secondary education sector, we need to tell our story well.

A new year with new opportunities: January in review

I am thrilled that coming into the new year I will soon be able to present a University of Waterloo flagship publication to you: The inaugural University of Waterloo State of the University Report 2014-15. This report provides insight into who and what we are at University of Waterloo, including our strengths in transformative research, experiential education, and innovation. Its title, Defining Tomorrow, is fitting as we enter the new year and look to seize new opportunities for the University.

Warm welcome as the fall term beckons: August in review

The anticipation is building! There is something so special about September on campus: a fresh injection of bright young minds, and the overwhelming sense of endless possibility.

As preparation continues for Orientation week, let me extend our entire university’s sincere thanks to our hundreds of staff and volunteers. Orientation is a massive effort that requires co-ordination and teamwork across all six faculties and our entire campus community – students, faculty, and staff.

Celebrating Canada, breakthrough research; remembering Andrei Anghel: July in review

Our 30th Canada Day celebration was a smashing success, thanks to the hard work of our community relations and events team, our Federation of Students, over one hundred volunteers, and a broad range of staff from across campus.

This event was an outstanding way to celebrate Canada’s confederation 147 years ago, and to show our gratitude and pride in all that it has become.
