What will our Fall and subsequent semesters look like? Have we done any brainstorming around possibilities of fully remote, partly remote or some other ideas?

For safety reasons, we will deliver all large classes online. We are working on a plan for in-person instruction for some classes and courses, if the conditions allow. We’ll confirm which courses and classes might happen in person as soon as we can. As we approach a modified campus experience this fall, it is important to remember that this is a fluid situation from a public-health perspective. We are still months away from the start of fall term with a number of opportunities for things to change.

We are currently working through the details for what classes, labs, and learning experience can be done safely in-person. We will continue to follow three core principles that are guiding our thinking for fall term: 1) We will continue to prioritize health and well-being of our community, 2) We will deliver quality learning experiences worthy of our students in any format, and, 3) We will phase in in-person activities when public health authorities say it is safe. Rest assured, however, we are taking the steps and making the plans needed to return to campus for students, faculty and staff alike, with safety as our top priority.

Timing for when and how we can make our campus available will depend on guidance we get from public health authorities.

On the graduate level, we are prioritizing graduate research programs where course sizes tend to be small and can more easily accommodate public health requirements.

For undergraduate programming, we are considering:

  • Whether the activity can be undertaken safely in-person
  • Having large lectures done online while have smaller sections of the course such as labs delivered in person
  • Whether learning outcomes depend on being in person
  • Whether offering in-person components would cause significant delays for students
  • Students who are unable to come to campus for in-person activities will be afforded the appropriate alternatives – either online or in-person in a future term
