Helen Chen

Dr. Chen is Professor of Practice and Director of the Professional Practice Centre in Health Systems, with cross-appointments in Statistics and Actuarial Science and in Computer Science. She leads the Generative AI for Health Lab, where her work spans artificial intelligence for public and population health, generative AI and synthetic data, health data quality and analytics, and large language processing.

As Director, Dr. Chen builds bridges between academic research and real-world practice. The Centre partners with industry and government organizations to bring AI solutions to health system challenges. Through these collaborations, she shapes research priorities around practical needs and moves tools from prototype to deployment.

Dr. Chen oversees experiential, supervised projects in which graduate students work on applied problems posed by industry and government partners. Under her guidance, students and trainees gain hands-on experience in health informatics, AI system design, and responsible AI deployment, preparing them for leadership roles in the health sector.
