“Approximate Groups: II”

Rahim Moosa, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

We continue to follow van den Dries Seminaire Bourbaki article entitled Approximate Groups [after Hrushovski, and Breuillard, Green, Tao]. The subject involves the interaction of additive combinatorics and model theory.

“Barto’s NU Theorem”

Ross Willard, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

This term we will work through the paper ”Finitely related algebras in congruence dis- tributive varieties have near unanimity terms,” Canad. J. Math. 65 (2013), 3-21, by Libor Barto. In this first lecture I will explain the title result of this paper. (Note: this is a 90-minute seminar.)

"Approximate Groups: III"

Rahim Moosa, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

I will discuss bounded quotients and the logic topology.

"Barto's NU Theorem (continued)"

Ross Willard, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

This seminar is working through the paper ”Finitely related algebras in congruence dis- tributive varieties have near unanimity terms,” Canad. J. Math. 65 (2013), 3-21, by Libor Barto. In this lecture I will cover more preliminaries to the main argument.
