What we do

The Office of Real Estate and Planning supports the strategic planning and land use management of the university through:

  • Inbound Leasing: negotiation and management of third-party leasing agreements on campus lands, tracking and managing lease renewals and terminations, and working closely with Finance to ensure the seamless management of revenues and expenses.
  • Outbound Leasing: supporting the campus community in the search, negotiation and ongoing management of off-campus leasing to meet unique space needs that cannot be met within the existing campus holdings. This includes leases in the local community for temporary uses, as well as longer term arrangements in other communities for unique program offerings.
  • Land Use Planning: overseeing the long-term stewardship of University land assets through prudent planning and development in alignment with the University’s strategic plans and growth objectives, including Waterloo @ 100, the Global Futures, and the Guidance Statement for the Development of UW Lands. This includes supporting the management and implementation of the Campus Plan, the R+T Park Strategic Plan and Innovation District Design, as well as working with government and third-parties for development and stewardship of lands and buildings.
  • Strategic development of R+T Park: management and strategic growth planning for the David Johnston Research + Technology Park in alignment with the Guidance Statement for the Development of UW Lands and the broader North Campus Lands, including the oversight and implementation of the R+T Park Strategic Plan and Innovation District Design.
