Our research
The Respiratory and Integrative Physiology Laboratory (RIPL) aims to better understand how the respiratory and cardiovascular systems interact in response to stressors, such as exercise and disease. An ongoing pursuit to learn about how the heart, lungs, vasculature, and respiratory muscles interact with one another to achieve incredible feats of exercise and physical performance is a field with many unanswered questions. The RIPL maintains focus on this goal while incorporating themes of sex as a biological variable, healthy aging, and pathophysiological adaptations associated with disease to form a comprehensive assessment of human physiology.
The RIPL is located in the B.C. Matthews Hall (BMH) building on the University of Waterloo campus and provides training opportunities for trainees at the undergraduate to doctoral levels. The lab is outfitted with equipment to study the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in humans at rest and during various types of exercise.
