Thriving in Transition: Psychological Insights for Navigating Early University Life

Dr. Siobhan Sutherland, Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor of Psychology

1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.
SJ2, Vanstone Lecture Hall, Room 1004

In this talk, Dr. Sutherland explores the psychology behind the shift from high school to university and how students can prepare for, and thrive during, this important transition. Drawing on her expertise as a scientist-practitioner who has worked closely with undergraduates in research, classroom, and clinical settings, Dr. Sutherland highlights common challenges facing new students such as adapting to independent living, building new social connections, and managing overwhelm.

The lecture will focus on psychological principles that help students navigate these challenges, offering insight into strategies for coping and thriving in the early university years. Dr. Sutherland draws on research from social, developmental, and clinical psychology to explore how connection, curiosity, and self-understanding can set a strong foundation for academic and personal success.
