Expression of Interest – Seeking Proposals for Research to Achieve the SDGs within the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Monday, June 8, 2020

As part of the United Nations ‘Decade of Action’ for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDSN Canada is seeking Expression of Interest from its members to develop research that addresses the economic, social, and/or environmental responses to COVID-19 that will lead to achieving one or more of the SDGs in Canada.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused historic disruptions throughout the world. As the nature of the virus moves from a public health emergency to the early stages of recovery, Canada must now consider how to ‘build back better’, how to use the stimulus money to achieve the sustainability objectives of the SDGs and work towards a more sustainable, safe, and prosperous world for all Canadians.

Two successful Expressions of Interest will each be awarded $10,000 to support the development of their research in a more detailed proposal to submit to other funding agencies. One of the successful submissions must include the University of Waterloo listed as a partner/co-applicant.

Objectives

  • Catalyze new research to identify how Canada can achieve one or more of the SDGs within the context of COVID-19.

  • Create opportunities for SDSN Canada members to work together in pursuit of the SDGs in Canada.

  • Support SDSN Canada members in accessing new funding available due to COVID-19.

Criteria

  • Be an employee of an institution that is a member of SDSN Canada at the time of submission.

  • Identify a partnership for the research that includes at least one other SDSN Canada member.

  • Identify at least two funding sources to submit a completed proposal.

  • Agree to recognize the support from SDSN Canada in the completed research.

  • Agree to an inter-institutional/transfer of funds agreement between their institution and the University of Waterloo.

How to Apply

  • Submit a two to three page Expression of Interest to Jon Beale, SDSN Canada Manager at jbeale@uwaterloo.ca. The deadline to submit is June 30th, 2020. Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by a Review Committee.

Each applicant should include the following information in their Expression of Interest:

  • Applicant name, title, affiliation, and email address.

  • Description of proposed research, with explicit links to one or more of the SDG targets and how the research will help Canada advance the SDGs.

  • Partner(s)/Co-Applicant(s) name, title, affiliation, and email address.

  • Identify at least two funding sources to submit a completed proposal, including name and value of the specific funding programs in mind.
