Les Belles Soeurs

In 1968 when Les Belles Soeurs by Québecois playwright Micael Tremblay was first produced, it causes something ofa scandal. The realistic portrayal of a neighbourhood group of women much like those the young Tremblay would have known himself, outraged its first audiences. Who would dare to show the often crude and always poignant truths of these women's lives? The English translation, by Bill Glassco and John Van Burek, faithfully captures the tension between these delightful characters.

The play is about Germaine Lauzon, who, having won a million stamps (much lik Zeller's club Z points) invites her sisters and neighbours to help her glue the stamps into the books which she will turn in ti redeem her prizes. As the evening progresses, jealousies, loyalties, odes to bingo, and the occasional vulgar tet-a-tet climax in an all-out war.
