Twenty-two years ago, John-Michael Tebelak, a young Graduate student from Carnegie-Mellon University, saw his Master's thesis - a modest musical called Godspell - open in an off-Broadway theatre in New York City. The reception according to his "baby" could not have been part of his creative process since fame of this magnitude is rarely premediated.
Godspell thrilled audiences then, as it does now, through its intimate audience-actor relationship and the utter simplicity of the show's presentation. There are no special effects, no massive set pieces and no series of dazzling costume changes. There are ten multi-talented actors, an infectious musical score and great good humour.
Godspell first opened in Toronto twenty years ago with a cast that included Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Victor Garber. They were just beginning careers without the knowledge of where their paths would lead.
The company -onstage and off- were young and dynamic and had created a spirit of friendship and harmony that made Godspell an important step along their way.
