UW Drama’s Mimetic Flesh was the University of Waterloo’s first site-specific theatre project; this form of performance changes people’s perspectives about what theatre really is…
The University of Waterloo Drama Department was excited to present UWaterloo’s first ever site specific theatre presentation that took place in the building that formerly housed the Lang Tannery in historic downtown Kitchener. Mimetic Flesh was an experimental theatre piece that explored the building’s unique past and history through the actors’ personal associations and interpretations of the building that lie in ‘heritage limbo’.
Mimetic Flesh ran Wednesday, March 24th to Saturday, March 27th, 2004 and was a collaborative, multi-disciplinary work featuring UWaterloo students, directed by Andy Houston. The actors created characters that existed in the Tannery site who go through a process of self-discovery, addressing how the truth of the individual is reflected in consideration of their personal body as well as in the physical space of the building.
The audience experienced the performance as a tour of the site; there were two tours per evening, one beginning at 7:00 p.m. and another at 9:00 p.m. Tickets were limited to 50 people per tour.
