Opportunities

The Water Economics Research Group (WERG) led by Professor Roy Brouwer at the University of Waterloo is recruiting candidates for 2 new postdoctoral fellow (pdf) positions for a minimum of 2 years, with the possibility of extension.

Job description

WERG members are involved in various interdisciplinary research projects in Canada and internationally, integrating state-of-the-art environmental-economic models, methods and policy instruments in water resources management. The projects address global water management challenges, such as water security under climate change, emerging contaminants of concern, plastics pollution, resource recovery in a circular economy, diffuse water pollution, river restoration, and groundwater protection, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), for example SDG6 (clean water and sanitation) and SDG-14 (life below water).

The pdf’s will work in interdisciplinary teams of experts in the above mentioned research projects, often involving other universities across Canada, policymakers and other stakeholders, developing novel integrated hydro-economic models, advancing social and economic water valuation methods, and designing effective market-based policy incentives.

Qualifications

For the pdf positions, the following requirements apply:

  • Completed PhD, preferably in environmental or resource economics, within the last 5 years
  • Interested candidates with a PhD in another related field (science, mathematics, engineering, environmental studies) with a demonstrated interest in water and economics are also encouraged to apply
  • Strong quantitative research skills (statistical/econometric/mathematical modelling, programming)
  • Fluency in English (speaking, writing)
  • Well-developed communication skills (presentation of results to policymakers, writing of scientific articles)

The pdf’s will be appointed in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo and have their offices in the University of Waterloo’s prestigious Water Institute.

Competitive pdf salaries will be offered depending on experience. A comprehensive benefits package will be offered on top of the pdf’s annual salary.

Questions related to these 2 positions can be addressed to rbrouwer@uwaterloo.ca.

Applications consisting of (1) a letter of application explaining why you are interested in joining, and how you see yourself contributing, to the WERG, and (2) a curriculum vitae including 3 referees should  be submitted by email to rbrouwer@uwaterloo.ca.
