Roy Brouwer

Professor

Roy is Professor of Economics at the University of Waterloo and Executive Director of the Water Institute. He is also the University Research Chair in Water Resource Economics. His research focuses on the economics of water resources management, climate change, water pollution, resource recovery, nature-based solutions and circular economy.

Leila Eamen

Postdoctoral Fellow

Leila is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo. She obtained her PhD degree in Environment and Sustainability in 2021 from the University of Saskatchewan. Leila’s research interests are in integrated hydro-economic modelling. She conducts research under the Canada Climate Action and Awareness Fund and the NSERC project on shaping the future of urban wastewater treatment.

Iban Ortuzar Fernandez

Iban is a Postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Economics. He obtained his PhD degree in Economics in 2024 from the University of Girona, Spain. Iban conducts research in the Climate Action and Awareness Fund project on the environmental-economic analysis of wetlands protection and restoration in the Great Lakes region.

Yichun Huang

Research Associate

Yichun is a Research Associate in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo. She obtained her PhD degree in Economics from Waterloo. Yichun her research focuses on the design and analysis of choice experiments in Canada and elsewhere.

Khusro Mir

Postdoctoral Fellow

Khusro is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics. He obtained his PhD degree in Economics in 2025 from the University of Waterloo. His PhD focused on Payments for Ecosystem Services, and he investigated, among others, the effect of forested watersheds on the costs of drinking water treatment in the project forWater. Khusro his research interest is in non-market valuation of environmental services.

Predrag is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo. He has a PhD degree in Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics from Guelph University. His research interest is in the economics of nature-based solutions to climate change.

Roza Ranjbar

Postdoctoral Fellow

Roza is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics. She obtained her PhD degree in automation and control from the University of Lille in France in 2024. Roza’s research interests are in the application of automation tools to improve sustainable water management. She uses model predictive controllers and mobile robots to collect data. Roza works on the value of information from hydrometric networks in Canada.

Jullian Sone

Jullian is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics. He obtained his PhD degree in Hydraulics Engineering and Sanitation in 2023 from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. Jullian conducts research on peatlands and wetlands as nature-based climate solutions under the Canada Climate Action and Awareness Fund.

Qiuya Zhao

PhD student

Qiuya Zhao is a PhD student at Hohai University and an International Visiting Graduate Student in the Water Economics Research Group. Her research focuses on the economic modelling of water markets in China using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model.

Danial Ahmed

His research examines how land-use policies and urban growth shape economic outcomes and influence the distribution of resources across communities. His ongoing research explores the economic implications of urbanization and land-development policies in Ontario, with a focus on preserving wetlands.
