Dr. Austin Roorda is an internationally recognized expert in optics and vision science, and a faculty member at the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science. After completing a PhD in Physics and Vision Science at Waterloo, Dr. Roorda went south and spent 30 years in the United States, including two decades at the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Roorda designs, builds, and applies advanced optical systems to study the human visual system in both health and disease. He pioneered adaptive optics for retinal imaging, creating the first adaptive-optics ophthalmoscope and advancing high-resolution techniques that transformed research in colour vision, retinal disease, and visual processing. His current work explores myopia, presbyopia, and novel two-photon methods for vision testing.
