Research interest
Information management with a particular focus on data quality, security and performance management issues found in high-availability, mission-critical systems. Such systems are commonly used in banking, as well as in healthcare which leads to my interest in the broad field of health informatics.

Background
Professor McKillop joined the University of Waterloo in 2004 to take up the inaugural JW Graham Research Chair in Health Information Systems. Ian works in the fields of information systems and information management with a particular focus on issues related to financial data quality, incident response, information security, and performance management.
Jointly appointed to both the School of Public Health Sciences and to the Cheriton School of Computer Science, Professor McKillop teaches courses on management, disaster recovery, as well as information security and privacy.
Ian helps lead Waterloo’s Professional Practice Centre in Health Systems – an innovative industry/university partnership that fosters experiential learning opportunities for students while delivering leading edge solutions to health organisations.
Ian has served on national and provincial committees with mandates related to information systems and funding in Canada’s health system. He is also actively involved in international initiatives. His work has contributed to Romanow, Claire, and other commissions and government inquiries.
